I have not done much post-editing for this – save for the cropping. And of course, the minor color and lighting adjustments with GIMP2 (and frankly, I think I should have left the lighting and color untouched – it would have given the snap a more authentic feel!)
What I like about this photo:
- The subject, which looks like it is in rapt attention (this was easier than it seems – birds of this particular species stand very still; and hardly move)
- I also like the sharpness in this photo, especially the eye and the beak.
What I’d like to improve?
- The framing for one – Although this negative effect has been reduced a bit after cropping. What I’d prefer to do was, have something interesting in the background.
- As a consequence of the previous point; I’d also increase the depth of field – so that the background is more visible.

Kiran,I kinda disagree with the last bit… the background is not interesting and there is little you can doubt about it. So I would have used a shallow field anyway.
The picture is quite good, actually, except for the burn in the centre which is distracting.
Also, the bird’s head is not as sharp as it should be, but I guess that’s a limitation in the S3s and such cameras that we use. Try using focus bracketing, I generally do for such shots

Mihir, now that you mention it – yes I think its good I kept the depth shallow. Couldn’t have got much in the background, unless I changes my point of view!
Focus bracketing – I definitely need to try it out – I have got this advice several times now. And while i’m at it, I should look at exposure bracketing too.

Thanks PC .. although calling it “professional” is taking it a bit too far
